Behind the Design: A Serene Coastal Living Room with Charming Traditional Details

Hi cuties! Grab a cup of tea and settle in. I want to share the inspiration behind one of our latest lookbooks, Belle Haven—why we designed it the way we did and, importantly, who we imagined would live in this timeless, gracious, subtly romantic kind of home.  Avid Kuotes readers may recall I recently shared the inspiration behind this Federal-style country home, a place we created with a gentleman named Rupert in mind. The home I’m writing about today was designed for a woman we’ll call Vivienne, and she, in this imaginary world I’ve dreamt up, happens to be Rupert’s sister. Vivienne is a woman uninterested in being impressive—she simply wants to be inspired by the world around her, and that’s what makes her so magnetic.

Its quiet luxury comes not from ornamentation but from the integrity of its materials, the restraint of its palette, and the clarity of its proportions. Gently weathered by salt air, the exterior’s silvery-gray patina echoes its sense of permanence and history.

Coastal Style with a Traditional Twist

Vivenne’s habits are a mix of old-world elegance and modern curiosity, a contrast you can also see reflected in her house. She prefers her home to blend breezy, coastal inspiration with traditional details. Airy blue hues and natural materials infuse her living room with a classic aesthetic, while accents like a beveled gold mirror, carved wood furniture, and a gold-leaf chandelier bring an element of traditional charm to each space. Never one afraid to mix styles, Vivienne also welcomes a smattering of modern touches like midcentury brass table lamps and clean-lined X-base ottomans.

Designing a Personal, Intentional Home

Vivienne’s home is a reflection of the way she loves to live. Though her days often take her far across the globe, she treasures having a sanctuary to return to. In the kitchen, serenity takes center stage: Soft natural light spills across marble counters edged with subtle detailing, creating a space that feels both grounding and refined. Her spice rack, organized by the countries she has explored, adds a personal touch to the calm elegance. Her home office, where she pens handwritten letters on stationery bearing her initials, is a quiet haven of reflection. And in the living room, evenings unfold around game boards and conversation, where laughter with dear friends lingers long after the night ends.

A Living Room Layout Perfect for Gathering

The living room in particular is a space designed for gathering. It’s grounded with a classic jute rug in a chic geometric pattern—the kind of textile that will last for years and truly never go out of style. Mirrored sofas face one another, bringing a sense of balance and timeless comfort to the room. Their traditional details—soft rounded arms, T-cushions, and turned wood legs—lend charm and familiarity to the silhouette. Alongside them, a pair of swivel chairs adds both beauty and function, creating an easy flow for conversation. And the ottomans make a refined statement with their painterly watercolor upholstery—a soft, artistic touch that feels both modern and serene. The sculptural "X" base adds a classic design note, balancing the piece with architectural presence. Functional yet beautiful, it’s just as suited to serve as extra seating as it is to stand alone as a chic accent.

Every piece of seating in Vivienne’s living room is part of our custom upholstery collection, which means you can choose from a variety of fabric options (and order swatches to try at home!) to find the material you love most. For the Kallie sofas, we chose Water’s Edge, a gorgeous performance velvet with a gentle sheen and a protective finish that repels water-based stains with ease (perfect for busy homes with kids and pets). The Helston swivel chairs are upholstered in a super soft, fluffy material that seriously feels like a hug in fabric form. Our Frederica ottomans are dressed in a cotton fabric with a botanical print that feels like stepping into a secret garden.

This room was designed around a palette of soft blues and serene greens—an endlessly chic combination that feels both timeless and soothing.

A dreamy pale blue wallpaper sets the backdrop in Vivienne’s living room, complemented by tailored blue sofas dressed with linen pillows in cream and ocean-inspired tones. Swivel chairs in a rich green, along with ottomans upholstered in painterly shades of blue and green, add depth and dimension. To complete the look, lush faux greenery blurs the line between indoors and out, enhancing the room’s natural, elevated charm.
