Welcome to the \u003Cem>Kuotes! \u003C/em>Our readers definitely know you from my recent post about \u003Ca href=\"https://www.kathykuohome.com/blog/turkish-delight-photo-diary-from-istanbul-the-bosphorus/?utm_source=social&utm_medium=blog&utm_campaign=cumberland\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">our Turkey trip\u003C/a> and of course from all the times I've gotten nostalgic for our \"\u003Ca href=\"https://www.kathykuohome.com/blog/get-to-know-kathy-kuo/?utm_source=social&utm_medium=blog&utm_campaign=cumberland\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Knock First\u003C/a>\" and young modeling days! But now they get to see your work in action and wow...what a project! Give the readers a bit of an overview on what you did on this San Fran backyard.\u003C/strong>\u003C/span>\r\n\r\n\u003Cspan style=\"font-family: opensans-regular;\">\u003Cstrong>John Gidding:\u003C/strong> E\u003Cspan style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ven though it was a small backyard, there was a lot of work to be done in terms of recreating and building new retaining walls. So, the first chunk of work was conceptualizing the yard. \u003Cem>\u003Cstrong>Before we started, there was a sloped backyard with a central path--instead of keeping that, the client was envisioning three platforms on three different levels.\u003C/strong> \u003C/em>The first push was just dealing with the topography and then the vision came together. \u003C/span>\u003C/span>\r\n\r\n\u003Cspan style=\"font-family: opensans-regular;\">\u003Cspan style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The idea with the three platform areas was for each to have a different personality and different usages. The client also wanted to have a \u003Ca href=\"https://www.kathykuohome.com/Product/ProductList/outdoor-firepits/?utm_source=social&utm_medium=blog&utm_campaign=cumberland\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">fire feature\u003C/a>. I put the fireplace at the end, and \u003Ca href=\"https://www.arborandfolly.com/about-1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Aaron McIntire\u003C/a> [also a \u003Ca href=\"https://www.kathykuohome.com/blog/aaron-mcintire-of-gunn-landscape-architecture/?utm_source=social&utm_medium=blog&utm_campaign=cumberland\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">friend of \u003Cem>The Kuotes\u003C/em>\u003C/a>] created a \u003C/span>\u003Cspan style=\"font-weight: 400;\">brilliant \u003C/span>\u003Cspan style=\"font-weight: 400;\">fountain in the space as well. \u003C/span>\u003Cem>\u003Cb>Once the retaining walls were in, the hardest work was going through city planning and getting engineers involved.\u003C/b>\u003C/em>\u003Cspan style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u003C/span>\u003Cspan style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Be\u003C/span>\u003Cspan style=\"font-weight: 400;\">cause the wind was pretty strong coming off the back of that hil\u003C/span>\u003Cspan style=\"font-weight: 400;\">l so\u003C/span>\u003Cspan style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u003C/span>\u003Cspan style=\"font-weight: 400;\">there were\u003C/span>\u003Cspan style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> some \u003C/span>\u003Cspan style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u003C/span>\u003Cspan style=\"font-weight: 400;\">conditions on how porous that wall had to be in order to withstand the wind\u003C/span>\u003Cspan style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. That’s what became the Jasmine wall.\u003C/span>\u003C/span>\r\n\u003Cblockquote>\r\n\u003Cp style=\"text-align: center;\">\u003Cspan style=\"font-family: opensans-regular;\">\u003Cstrong>\"The Jasmine wall is like a screen that allows the wind to sort of rustle through it--it’s very special and blows the scent of Jasmine throughout the space. The scent flows through the fireplace all the way through into the house. It's so simple but so perfect--that's tough to do! \u003C/strong>\u003C/span>\r\n\r\n\u003Cspan style=\"font-family: opensans-regular;\">\u003Cspan style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u003Cstrong>John Gidding: \u003Cspan style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I think the \u003Ca href=\"https://www.kathykuohome.com/Product/ProdGroup/concrete-outdoor-furniture/?utm_source=social&utm_medium=blog&utm_campaign=cumberland\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">concrete\u003C/a> work is exemplary on this project. \u003Cem>\u003Cstrong>Every detail was lovingly crafted by Troy and Fred of \u003Ca href=\"http://www.5elementsdesign.com/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">5 Elements Design + Construction\u003C/a> in San Francisco\u003C/strong>\u003C/em>. \u003C/span>\u003C/strong>\u003C/span>\u003Cspan style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It’s the bracket that holds the whole project together and the big lift of the work at the beginning was getting the concrete details right. Not only is it doing a lot of structural work, it’s expressed in a very purposeful way to look like off-set and jagged woodwork. It looks like slabs of wood, but it’s really all concrete.\u003C/span>\u003C/span>\r\n\u003Cblockquote>\r\n\u003Cp style=\"text-align: center;\">\u003Cspan style=\"font-family: opensans-regular;\">\u003Cb>\"Both the fireplace and the retaining walls have that same elegant aesthetic\u003C/b>\u003Cstrong>.\"\u003C/strong>\u003C/span>\u003C/p>\r\n\u003C/blockquote>\r\n\u003Cspan style=\"font-family: opensans-regular;\">\u003Cspan style=\"font-weight: 400;\">That was a very laborious process...we used larger slats of wood and cut them down to have sharp edges. These are mature trees that we sourced all over the Bay Area.\u003Cem>\u003Cstrong> We worked hard to find the perfect \u003Ca href=\"https://rstyle.me/+qb37qgQ2tCbQCj_QYtKO8A\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">maple trees\u003C/a>.\u003C/strong> \u003C/em>Especially the one that sticks out from inside the deck--that tree had to have an abundance of personality. We looked all over the place for it. We ended up with some large trees that had to be helicoptered in.\u003C/span>\u003C/span>\r\n\u003Cblockquote>\r\n\u003Cp style=\"text-align: center;\">\u003Cspan style=\"font-family: opensans-regular;\">\u003Cstrong>\"\u003Cb>There are also two flowering \u003Ca href=\"https://rstyle.me/+EPuNEJ46h0Jh30RODL9C4w\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">dogwood trees\u003C/a> that will frame the view out of the master bedroom--they’ll take a few years to really bloom, but I think it will be an incredible experience when they do\u003C/b>\u003C/strong>\u003Cstrong>.\" \u003C/strong>\u003C/span>\u003C/p>\r\n\u003C/blockquote>\r\n\u003Cspan style=\"font-weight: 400; font-family: opensans-regular;\">All the trees are doing very well--the maples are a little bit frazzled because it’s their first season there, but the \u003Cspan style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u003Ca href=\"https://rstyle.me/+TaqVe0whNW1FZLsH_psPeA\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">olive trees\u003C/a> \u003C/span> have been very happy immediately where we installed them.\u003C/span>\r\n\r\n\u003Chr />\r\n\r\n\u003Cspan style=\"font-family: opensans-regular;\">\u003Cb>Okay and we can't ignore all of the gorgeous \u003Ca href=\"https://www.kathykuohome.com/Product/ProductList/Garden-Outdoor/?utm_source=social&utm_medium=blog&utm_campaign=cumberland\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">outdoor furniture\u003C/a> in this space! Mentally, I am lounging in one of those chairs by the fireplace right now!\u003C/b>\u003C/span>\r\n\r\n\u003Cspan style=\"font-family: opensans-regular;\">\u003Cspan style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u003Cstrong>John Gidding:\u003C/strong>\u003C/span>\u003Cspan style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The one piece of furniture I’m in love with is another Aaron McIntyre design. It’s the \u003Cspan style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u003Ca href=\"https://www.kathykuohome.com/Product/ProductList/console-tables/?utm_source=social&utm_medium=blog&utm_campaign=cumberland\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">console\u003C/a> \u003C/span> with the soapstone top and it incorporates the details he provided for the decking. The decking has a triple-ribbon of ipe wood that defines the perimeter, and the console has a similar detail. It also has a sense of permanence.\u003C/span>\u003Cem>\u003Cb> It feels solid and feels like that yard has been there forever and has been welcoming people forever\u003C/b>\u003C/em>\u003Cspan style=\"font-weight: 400;\">--it’s substantial.
